چکیده

TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles are probably the first ones that have gained entrance to the market for their photocatalytic and UV-absorbent properties. As large volumes of these nanoparticles are required by the industry, the search for environmentally gentle processes for the synthesis of the same is also growing strong. Continuing our quest with the microorganism based synthesis of nanomaterials, we present in this chapter that, when challenged with appropriate precursor, the bacterium Actinobacter spp. can lead to the formation of ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles. The biological way of synthesizing these materials probably leads to the insitu doping of elements like C, F and N into their crystal lattice that is evidenced by a red shift in the absorption edge. As the doping is expected to affect the photocatalytic activity of these materials under different light conditions, studies to prove this have also been undertaken here. This chapter delineates those in detail.

Simple and Low Temperature Method for Preparation of Nanocrystalline ZnO in Presence of [EMIM][EtSO4] and Their Photocatalytic Activities

Simple, low temperature and environmentally benign green route is proposed for preparation of nanocrystalline ZnO in presence of a low-cost and halide-free room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) by refluxing at 95 °C for 60 minutes. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies display that the products are well-crystallized in the form of wurtzite hexagonal. Morphology of the as-prepared ZnO was character...

Extending photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles to visible region of illumination and the study of magnetic property of Er doped TiO2 nanoparticles

Erbium is a member of the lanthanide rare earth series and possess 11 electrons in the 4f shell. In the trivalent charge state the 4f electrons are shielded from the host environment by completely filled 5s and 5p electronic shells [1]. Er doped TiO2 nanocrystals are mainly used for optical applications [2-3]. Bouzidi.et.al [4] reported optical laser application of Er doped SnO2 nanoparticles. ...
